WABA Blue Tick & Display Name

Part 1: Display Name Setup & Approval

What is a Display Name?

Your display name is what customers see when they receive a WhatsApp message from you — even before they save your number. It represents your brand on WhatsApp.

Guidelines for Display Name

Your display name MUST:

  • Match your registered business or brand name

  • Be consistent with your website, app, or marketing materials

Your display name MUST NOT:

  • Contain URLs, email IDs, or phone numbers

  • Be a generic category name (e.g., "Shoes Store")

  • Be misleading or unrelated to your business

How to Submit / Change Display Name (Self-Serve)

You can manage your display name directly from WhatsApp Manager — no third-party involvement needed.

  1. Go to business.facebook.com

  2. From the left menu, open WhatsApp Manager

  3. Select your WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)

  4. Click on Phone Numbers in the left sidebar

  5. Click the Settings icon (⚙) next to your phone number

  6. Under Profile, find the Display Name field

  7. Click Edit, enter your new display name

  8. Click Submit for Review

Prerequisites & Rejection: You must have Admin access on Meta Business Manager to edit the display name. If rejected, Meta will show the reason and you can resubmit directly from the same screen.

Timeline: Meta reviews display name requests within 1–3 business days. You'll receive a notification in Business Manager once approved or rejected.

Important: Display name changes are limited. Frequent changes may trigger a review hold. Choose a stable, long-term brand name.

Part 2: Blue Tick (Official Business Account Verification)

What is the Blue Tick?

A blue verified badge next to your display name signals that Meta has confirmed your business is authentic and notable. It builds customer trust and increases message open rates.

Am I Eligible?

Meta grants blue tick only to notable businesses. This is the hardest criteria to meet and the most common reason for rejection.

What "Notable" Means to Meta

Your brand must have independent, third-party media coverage — meaning journalists or publications wrote about your business without being paid to do so.

Accepted Media Sources

  • Articles in national or regional newspapers (e.g., Economic Times, Business Standard, Hindu BusinessLine, Mint)

  • Coverage in industry publications (e.g., Inc42, YourStory, VCCircle, TechCrunch)

  • Features in TV news segments (with online article link)

  • Press releases picked up and independently written about by credible media outlets

NOT Accepted

  • Your own press releases or blog posts

  • Paid advertorials or sponsored content

  • Social media profiles or posts — Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter/X (even with large followings)

  • Customer reviews or rating platforms (Trustpilot, Google Reviews)

  • Directory listings (Justdial, Sulekha, etc.)

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Meta Business Manager must be verified

  • Phone number verified with an approved display name

  • Two-step verification enabled on your WhatsApp number

  • Messaging quality rating must be Green

  • No recent policy violations or bans on your WABA

How to Apply for Blue Tick

Self-Serve via WhatsApp Manager (Preferred)

Many businesses can apply directly from WhatsApp Manager.

Check if the 'Submit Request' option is visible in your account.

  • Go to Meta Business Suite → Settings → More Business Settings → WhatsApp

  • Select your WhatsApp Business Account and open WhatsApp Manager

  • Under the Overview section, select your phone number

  • Enable two-step verification for that number (required before applying)

  • Go to Profile → click Submit Request

  • Fill in brand details: operating country, parent brand, primary language

  • Add up to 5 organic PR links from credible, non-sponsored publications

  • Submit — Meta will review and notify you via Business Manager

How Long Does It Take?

There is no guaranteed timeline — Meta reviews on their own schedule.

  • Display name approval: 1–3 business days

  • Blue tick: typically a few weeks to a few months; larger, more prominent brands are prioritised

How to Improve Your Chances

  • Keep your messaging quality Green — avoid spam complaints, opt-outs, and blocks

  • Build a strong digital presence: active website, social media, and press coverage

  • Ensure Meta Business Manager is verified at the business level

  • Avoid any policy violations on your WABA

  • Increase your messaging tier (Tier 2 or Tier 3 strengthens the nomination case)

Part 3: Meta Business Manager Verification

This is a prerequisite for both display name approval and blue tick. You can complete this yourself.

  1. Go to business.facebook.com

  2. Navigate to Settings → Business Info → Start Verification

  3. Submit business documents: GST certificate, incorporation document, or utility bill with business name

  4. Meta reviews within 3–7 business days

  5. You will receive a notification in Business Manager once verified

FAQs

Q: Can I apply for blue tick directly without a BSP?

A: Yes — if Meta has enabled self-serve access for your account, you will see a 'Submit Request' button under Profile in WhatsApp Manager.

Q: What if my blue tick request gets rejected?

A: Meta will notify you via Business Manager. You must wait 30 days before reapplying. Use this time to strengthen your media coverage before the next attempt.

Q: Will blue tick affect my messaging limits?

A: No. However, having a higher messaging tier (Tier 2 or Tier 3) strengthens your nomination case.

Q: What if my display name gets rejected?

A: Meta will show the rejection reason in Business Manager. You can revise and resubmit directly from WhatsApp Manager → Phone Numbers → Settings.

Q: I changed my brand name. Do I need to update my display name?

A: Yes. Log in to WhatsApp Manager and follow the self-serve display name update steps in Part 1.

Q: Do social media followers count towards notability?

A: No. Meta does not accept social media profiles, follower counts, or social media posts as proof of notability. Only independent editorial coverage in recognised publications is accepted.
